The very recent budget limiting in FI sounds like news, but isn't really. Yesterday it was 75 years ago that a most dramatic chapter in motor sport history began. A new set of rules had been introduced by which the cars were limited to a total dry weight of 750 kilograms. This limit was partly inspired by the great depression lack of cash (see D. David's GP history pages). The first race held under this new formula took place on May 27, 1934 on the Avus racetrack in Berlin and was the first appearance of Auto Union's Silber Pfeile / Silver Arrow. Alfa Romeo drivers Guy Moll and Achille Varzi finished 1st and 2nd, and August Momberger in his Auto Union took third place. (photos courtesy Audi AG, see also their press release)
Bottomline is of course that even from budget limits great racing history can evolve.
