1925 Lancia Lambda 5th Series Torpedo
With a monocoque body, four-wheel brakes, independent front suspension and V4 overhead camshaft engine, many enthusiasts view the Lancia Lambda as one of the great and innovative automobiles of all time. The Lambda was also successful in competition with privately entered cars finishing fourth and fifth behind the works OMs in the first Mille Miglia of 1927.
The Lambda was continually developed through nine distinct series, chassis 12697 being a 5th Series Torpedo manufactured in 1925 and registered in the UK on the 15th June 1925.
Belfast architect William McVeigh of McVeigh & Brown Architectural Partnership and founder member of the Ulster Vintage Car Club saw the car advertised in a 1956 edition of Motor Sport magazine. The Lambda was located in Cheltenham and the seller agreed to send it across the Irish Sea to be inspected by McVeigh and vintage car expert Billy Galbraith. A deal was agreed and although it was able to drive from the ferry to his home in Castlereagh, it was clear the car was in need of work and McVeigh spent the next three years ‘rejuvenating it’.
A 1960 newspaper article on file by journalist Jack Magowan describes how ‘after nine coats of paint and the replacement of a score or more parts, the car now resembles that which left the factory in Italy in 1925 at a cost of £600’.
On completion the car won the Tipperary Trophy for best performance in driving tests combined with the highest standard of general condition.
Mr. McVeigh attended multiple race meetings, hillclimbs, rallies and tours throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s until the car was sold to the current Northern Irish owner in October 1995.
A further restoration was carried out between 1999 and 2001 where the body was painted in the current dark red colour. Ex-Lancia Motor Club president and Lambda collector Gerald Batt supplied a replacement aluminium Tipo 78 cylinder head which was rebuilt with replacement valves and guides.
The car has since been used regularly for tours and rallies and the occasional competition appearance.
This well-maintained Lambda also benefits from the desirable upgrade of 8th series engine, gearbox and brakes and has been fitted with correct specification 21 inch wheels and tyres.
A new clutch was fitted in March 2008, a new crown wheel and pinion in 2009, new cylinder liners in 2015 and new stub axles in 2018 (£2,285.98). A new radiator was also fitted at a cost of £1,662, a new head gasket in 2019 and a high-torque starter motor in 2022.
This UK registered 5th Series Lambda is in good order and is accompanied by a history file containing duplicate buff log book, VSCC Eligibility document, invoices, correspondences and MOT certificates. Also present is a handwritten notebook which documents the various tours and rallies the owner and car took part in as well as details of routine maintenance.
