A coal gas generator mystery (upd. 1937/38 De Soto, Plymouth or Dodge?)

Carlos Riplollès sends this picture. It was taken in 1942 during a field trip to mount Aneto in the Pyrenees, Spain. My friend knows it's their grandfather's car, but nobody seems to know the make or model. I've also noticed the rear gadget mounted on the car and have no idea about what it is. They seem to be repairing it. Could anybody identify the car? The family would really appreciate it.
editor: dear Carles , the 'gadget' you have noticed is a wood or coal burning generator to produce combustible gas to the engine during the wartime years when petrol was scarce or impossible to get. We find these generator cars all over Europe in that time. It seems the three gentleman are trying to get it burning (again). But for sure there are more knowledgeable readers who can explain better what they are up to. Plus which car it is of course!

Lots of people were severely poisoned by the generator-gas those years. When the milklorry came by, if one had caught a nasty big rat one could place the trap by the gas-checkout-tube and open the valve. When the milk-cans were loaded the rat was stone dead.

Hello,
the bags are the wood cuts that were filled into the gas generator. The quality of the wood is important, if the wood is not dry enough you get more sooth.

These "Gazogene" come up quite frequently for sale, there also seems to have been a commercial "Bulk" unit mounted on a truck rather like an LPG tanker, one for sale on a Citroen U23 about 6 months ago. I'm not sure if the bag was compulsory or not, maybe not as it looks to be packed away?

Hi.The car is a 1937 De Soto Series S3 six 4-dr sedan. The chromed talilight housing and the belt line that bends down following the rear fender top line tells that. The "back pack" is a gas generator. My guess is that they are cleaning out ashes to reload the thing.Driving range on one fill was about 50 to 80 km.Car drivers those days were always black and sooty as those contraptions produced not only very toxic gas but also enormous amounts of soot and tar.We had lots of them here in Sweden too. They for sure are part of motoring history.

The car is probably an Austin Morris type, just maybe a Hillman. One needs to compare, to be exact, but that is the direction, I guess.

To me it seems the car is a 1937/38 Mopar product (Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge/De Soto).
A 1940's publication named 'Gasgeneratoren voor automobielen' explains, in Dutch, all about generators like this one.

Hi,
Do you want to know the make of the car or gas producer [charcoal burner]? Thats what the bags are on the roof.
I don't know the make of the producer [there were lots of different ones made] but from here the car looks like it may belong to the Chrysler family eg Dodge, Plymouth etc. Possibly late 1930s.
Cheers,
Manuel in Oz

Car appears to be 1937-38 Plymouth. For the gas generator see http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazog%C3%A8ne

This is a Chrysler, probably a six cylinder, model year 1937. The coal burning generator where very common during the 1940s in Spain, just after the Civil War. Where made by lots of worksops almost in every little village, and where known in Spain under the name of ·Gasógeno"
