A lady in a 1905 Chenard et Walcker?

These two photographs come from the Derek Rausch family album. Both show a 1905 Chenard et Walcker car, at least that is what the description said. Is this correct, and why? The car was purchased new in Brighton, England on 6 February 1905.

The first photograph was taken on 6/2/1905 in Salisbury (now - Harare), Southern Rhodesia, with Hilda Pratt nee Stuttaford at the wheel. Yes, a lady! The second photograph was taken in 1906 at the Jumbo Mine, Mazoe (now - Mazowe), Southern Rhodesia, with George Newman at the wheel.

Thank you, Andre, for sharing these photographs with us. Do you also have photographs which you found in an old family album? Please send them to us, then we can share them with other pre-war car enthusiasts.

For a comparison between the Chenard & Walcker and the MMC I uploaded two images, one of an MMC of the same model shown from the side like mystery photo no.1, the other of the C&W in more or less the same position as mystery photo number 2. The only way the cars are similar lies in the fact that both are cars; four wheels, a bonnet, a steering wheel and a similar type of body. If you would really observe, you would notice that they are totally different cars in almost every aspect. The separate brake lever, the typical MMC-shape of the bonnet with louvre panel, the hand grip on the top side of the bonnet, the characteristic chain cover and more details make the mystery car an MMC without any doubt. Besides the C&W is a much larger car with its 14hp.
Identification of especially the early cars of the 20th century is a craft, which takes many years to master. I have learned a lot, but I am still learning every day. And if I'm not 100% certain I will always indicate this, because it is better to give no name at all than a wrong name!

According to my photos it looks like a 1903 10 horse power Chenard et Walker.

Something's amiss. It can't have been bought in Brighton on 6 February 1905 and photographed in Salisbury, Southern Rhodeisai on the same day.

This is obviously not a Chenard & Walcker, but an MMC, in fact a 1902 8hp model. Apparently it was still reliable enough in 1905 to perform under the heavy conditions in Africa. Why it was called C&W I wouldnt know, the car certainly doensn't look like one. Maybe C&W was the name of its successor and an image of that car successively lost, but not its memory.
