A man's hobby? (UPDATE: EMF, Hupmobile? )

A photo detail can be deceiving. We see three workers assembling or reparing two similar engines. Now click the photo and here you go. The true specialists at work. This photo was recently send to us by David Greenlees, using our PAGE 2 where you can submit all kinds of photos & stories (car related, that is).
The women (click pic for enlargement) are working in a Los Angeles  shop called 'Auto Repairs'. According to David the front engine has a cylinder that looks similar to an EMF. Can anyone identify either the setting or the engines?

The engine in the foreground with a single 2 cylinder block, one of 2 blocks ( 4 cylinders ) is most certainly an E.M.F... most probably a 1911 or 1912 , as it has the adjustable lifters first offered by E.M.F. in 1911. Don`t you love the 2" diameter intake and exhaust ports leading to 2 1/8" valves in a 4" bore ?? Every E.M.F. engine had to pass a dyno test and produce at least 34 horsepower before being installed in an automobile . A VERY WELL MADE automobile that is little appreciated today .
