This impressive photo was taken in the nineteen-thirties and was sent to us by Stefan Vrancken. Behind the wheel we see his Great-uncle Jef Vrancken (1908 - 1958). Stefan told us that the car belonged to Garage Vrancken, which was owned by his great-grandfather Léon Vrancken (1875 - 1937) who also had a taxi service.

The car appears to be a Mercedes. But can someone tell us more about this particular model? Is there anyone who recognizes this actual car, and can maybe tell us what happened to it?

First, the date. The car has split rims. Very much about 1925. The door handle is a slight throw-back, but not impossibly so for a sedate town car. In favour of a Mercedes is the V-radiator and an embossed decal on the header tank, possibly a Mercedes star. Worrying features? The pronounced radiator hinge, the radiator bars, and the hub-caps. The hub-caps are quite unusual and much more in keeping with a Gräf & Stift, or possibly an Austro-Daimler. The tyres are obviously balloon tyres, which must have seemed wonderful after the high pressures of beaded edge. They look about 33" or 34" to me. 33" would give a wheelbase length of about 3.7(6) metres, compatible with a Gräf & Stift S3 of about 1925.
