A mystery car with a pointy radiator
"Hello, this photo was taken in 1924 and shows the South Vancouver Fire Department with all its fine men and good equipment. The Fire Chief's automobile looks to be something very special. This roadster is big, low and most likely has lots of power. I am quite sure it is American, but I don't know of any with a pointy radiator. Do any of the readers know what it is?"

I think I have found another photo of an Abbott-Detroit. This is on the BC Archives website, A-03914. The photo was taken in 1910 on the Cariboo Wagon Road at 12 Mile House. I would suggest you see it on the website for possibly better clarity. What do you think?

A Speedwell you say? Well I thought that was looking a little too sporty and deluxe to be a Studebaker. The CVA has a second photo taken at the same time and they describe it as being the chief's Studebaker. I will have to inform them it is a Speedwell. The VFD has a museum and archives so, maybe, we could find out bit more history on these automobiles. I have included a CVA photo of the Glide roadster.

Sorry, there appears to be some miscommunication here. This car is a Glide of course. The car in your previous comment, with the clearly visible S on the radiator emblem, is a Speedwell.

So, it looks to be an Abbott-Detroit Battleship roadster. Well, I have not heard of that one before, but it is quite a car. Thanks to all with their guesses. I would like to see the photo of the other one in Vancouver. Grimmo, would you please give me the call number for that photo?
While the chief of the SVFD was driving around in that grand automobile the chief of the VFD was driving a Glide roadster. The VFD also had a very nice Studebaker with a torpedo touring body. Around 1920 it was replaced with a wire wheeled Marmon roadster.

Steve, if you web-search “City of Vancouver Archives” and select the “Search Archives – City of Vancouver Archives” result, put in “Abbott Detroit” and the photo is the top choice.

It is even more remarkable that the forerunner of the Battleship roadster, the 1912 44 Artillery roadster, isn't mentioned in the Standard Catalog of Beverly Rae Kimes at all despite the fact that it was the “One Big Sensation of the New York Show” in January 1912. Photos of this model seem to have vanished in the fog of time. The photo below was published in an advertisement in Automobile Topics of January 20th, 1912.

Agree, definitely an Abbott-Detroit Battleship of 1913. Not many photos of it on the web, the car said not to have sold well except, perhaps, in Vancouver as oddly there is a photo of another one there in 1913, in the Vancouver City archives but it wasn’t this SVFD fire-car then.

Just looking at my Standard Catalog of American Cars, the car in question is without question an Abbott-Detroit model 44-50 Battleship roadster. Would love to know the history of that great car before it disappeared .

There are at least some twenty American makes with a more or less pointy radiator, but in this case I'd try the Abbott-Detroit Battleship roadster.

Your big roadster is a 1913 Abbott-Detroit 44-50 Battleship Roadster. You can do a search and you will find that to be true.
