A new generation of pre-war car rescuers

Report by Francisco Carríon (on right in photo):

The continuity of the pre-war car hobby among young people is under fire. Just a few days ago we wrote about the auction of the Fords from the Den Hartog museum to attract younger people. But as many of us know, true interest usually arises from participation in the hobby: being a co-driver in rallies, helping -where possible- with a restoration... You need to touch these cars! So, how about helping in bringing a barn find to the light - arguably the best part of the hobby.

In the case of the Peugeot 201 on these photographs the team of rescuers consisted of young afficionados from 6 to 25 years old. Only the eldest (this modest writer) was really interested in pre-war cars before arriving. The others -especially the youngest- were casual observers who fell in love with the little Peugeot. They never guessed that this old piece of rust located in the bottom end of a garage could roll on its own deflated tyres, even pulled by a crane! Also they didn´t expect such cute lines emerging from this rural place. Definitely a show for these youngsters, which made all of them much more interested in this pre-war car. Since this day they come back regularly asking about the progress  of the Peugeot in the workshop...!

So, over to you, when did you see real interest of young people about really old cars? The editors of PreWarCar have decided to dedicate our 2015 calendar to the New Generation. So sorry chaps, no 'Proper Cars True Ladies' next year but Youngsters with Oldies. We're looking forwards to seeing your contributions come in! Please send to office @ prewarcar.com

I am the youngest prewar car nut I know. I am 32. Their is a big problem in the hobby. The older generation needs to welcome younger hearts and minds.

Let us encourage the next generation.
When I was young, my father was asked to give an appraisal on a Dodge. Puzzled, he thought to himself, why would she need and appraisal on a one year old Dodge. But she was a friend of my grandmother. We honoured her request. When we got to her home, she grabbed the keys and walked past her one year old Dodge and opened the door to the garage. Inside, on a hardwood floor was a 54 Dodge with 24,000 miles. Original plastic still on the back seat. My father said I remember this car as a boy!!
Then the kind woman said, your mother took care of us in our time of need, we got the property tax bill today and we do not have to clip a Canada Savings Bond coupon, you can have the car for 850 dollars. My father said it was worth more, but she but her foot down. She had crawled under the car and completed oiled the chassis and pulled the sparks and filled the cylinders with oil. In a few days, the car was running silently and no smoke. You could balance a cdn quarter on the block and it would not fall over. Transport Canada cake with a tractor trailer and took 53 Chevrolet with 13000 miles, 29 Dodge with 26000 miles, 54 Dodge and 1928 Ford CA297 (of 4000000 built) away to comparison test against current day models. You all know who won!
Let's keep the next generation going!
PS, when I was 12, I learned body work, upholstery, mechanical, but only after my homework was done.
All the best
