EARLIER: report by Simon Langridge:
Sunday morning the weather didn't look too bad so I decided to
visit the famous Villa D'Este Concours. Unfortunately the weather became steadily worse and by the time I arrived, the pretty town on the shores
of Lago di Como (homepage) was thoroughly wet through.
Once inside the grounds of the Villa d'Este, the amazing selection of
cars made up for any disappointing weather. There was truly something
for everyone's taste here, especially if you like your cars shiny.
One car that particularly caught my eye, or rather ear was the 1931 Bentley Speed Six Aerodynamic by Gurney Nutting. The
exhaust note, even at tickover as the car waited in the mud to file past
the judges made your hair stand on end. In stark contrast was the
Duesenberg J from the same year, powered by a whispering engine more
fitting for this luxury motor car. Amongst the many other pre war
limousines, sports cars and tourers were a not insubstantial Maybach DS8
Zeppelin, Bentley 8 liter boattail (edit.: the boattail being a very useful attribute in these circumstances), a Bugatti 57 Atalante and - not often noted or mentioned with so many giants around - the pretty, little Austin with coachwork by Swallow.
Even in the rain, worth the trip." (Simon, thank you so much for taking the trouble to send your report and photos.)
