A sick idea? ( Update: 1950's PAC rally at Zandvoort Circuit)

The organisers of The 100 Miles received this suggestion to 'add livelyness' to the coming night rally. Question: is it sick or just childish ? As they like to stick with strictly pre-war rules & gaming, the reader came up with this photo from the archives of well known bugattist Jean Prick. The photo is showing a Peugeot Bebe during a prewar club event at a location which looks like a circuit (click photo to see Dunlop and other ad signs). More important is the description which explains that the ball must be volleyed from a driving car. It is up to driver and co-driver to decide how fast to drive. No further explanation is needed to show how this would work out from a saloon - or worse - a coupe...  And all this of course by winter night time conditions. Like with any rally the proof of the pudding is only partly in horsepower, only partly in map reading, but in first and not in last instance in carefully examining The Rules.

It might be childish but in what way could their actions be 'sick'? That implies action that would attract moral opprobrium. The photo has nothing to do with a rally, surely. It is an example of light hearted games that people used to enjoy in more innocent and easily pleased times. However it persuaded me, out of idle curiosity, to look at the Rules which prompted a question.

"Only fully mechanically operated distance-and time measuring equipment tools are allowed. No modern device such as Tripmaster, Twinmaster or Speed Pilot may be used." I am aware of devices before the Haldas, (the Monastere, for example) but were there any before the Second World War? The single hyphen between the fifth and sixth words but not sixth and seventh leaves me undecided if it means 'only mechanical time measuring and mechanical distance measuring,' or if it means 'only mechanical time-and-distance measuring which implies an instrument to indicate under or over average speed. Was such an instrument available pre-war?

editor: the word 'sick' was meant in an exagerating tongue-in-cheek way. Regarding the instrument you ask for. Check our earlier feature. http://www.prewarcar.com/magazine/previous-features/are-you-tough-enough-for-the-flat-lands-update-dont-forget-the-measham-night-rally-014374.html

Calling a Buggattiste a bugattist (sic) in one and the same sentence as the name Jean Prick, Bugattiste if ever there was one: please mind what you write or the Bugatti-community might just excommunicate you !

The circuit looks to be Zandvoort which was littered with Caltex signs and the event most certainly a late 1950ish Rally from the PAC (Pioneer Automobile Club) which usually used this circuit for all sorts of gymkana's.

I don't think that this idea is meant to be taken seriously. Possibly an idea for "Jeux sans Frontieres".
As the General Rules say
"The normal traffic regulations prevail always above the indications in these regulations."
Nothing to worry about ! :D
All the best with the Rally.
