A Spirited Sports Car

Seventy-five years ago Mercedes-Benz presented a new sports car based on the Type 150 Sports Saloon. Called the 150 Sports Roadster it featured a boattail body typical of that period, including the backswept, divided windscreen and two externally mounted spare wheels. The front with its main-beam headlamp gives away that the engine is mounted in front of the rear axle. It was a spirited unit that gave the 150 an acceleration comparable to any supercharged car. Mercedes management had high hopes that the Sports Roadster would sell well, but despite its relatively low price only a few examples were built. The exact number is unknown, one statistic shows 20 units; the statistics for bodies made in Sindelfingen on the other hand mention only five: one in 1934, four in 1935. Yet the delivery of only two cars can be proved and one of these still exists, making the 150 Sports Roadster one of the rarest automobiles made by Mercedes-Benz. Unless you know where the other one is? (photos courtesy Daimler AG)
