A, X or Y?

Around 1926 the brothers Fred and August Duesenberg were designing the Model X, a stock passenger car to replace their Model A. Eventually this became the mighty Model J. The testbed for the J’s chassis and running gear was a prototype phaeton, called the Model Y. After Fred’s death in 1932 the Y was sold to Augie, who used the engine for a racing car and scrapped the chassis. The phaeton body was then installed on a Model A chassis. During the Fifties and Sixties among Duesenberg historians a dispute ensued over the identity of this car. Its mixture of parts from various sources were debated in letters and notes trying to decide if it was a Model A or a Model X. Unconsidered was the ultimate conclusion that this was the only surviving Duesenberg Model Y, assembled by Augie Duesenberg himself. No matter what your perspective on the issue is, it will be intersting to see what the car will bring at The Auburn Auction by Worldwide Auctioneers on September 5th. In the same week the town will also hosts the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival. (photos courtesy Worldwide Auctioneers)
