Abandoned mystery car in France in May 1940

Michael Schlenger sent in this photo. Hardly a mystery but still nice to see:

"My vast collection of prewar car photos includes several prints showing mystery vehicles, and I hope that the readers of this great online magazine are able to help!
Today I need the expertise of French car conoisseurs, at least I believe that the car in question is a French one.

The picture shown here was taken in May 1940 probably by a German soldier belonging to a supply unit behind the lines during the quick advance of the German army in France.
It appears the car has been abandoned on a meadow by its owner due to engine trouble. Most likely it belonged to someone who was trying to flee from the enemy troops by car.

The oval shaped radiator is quite distinctive and there seems to be something like a badge on it. From its overall appearance this car is probably from the mid-1920s and I assume it was a medium-sized vehicle of a lesser known manufacturer of quality cars.
Thanks in advance for any useful piece of information!"

Well Michael, we're most curious what other photos you may have. Living in Germany you would not easily recognise a Chenard Walcker. Just go to the Chenard Walcker clubwebsite to see lots more. We need to ask the club which vintage CW is showing up in your photo.

The letters AV means that the car was registered in the town of Sedan or Cherleville Mézières.
The photo was taken in 1940 but the number AV is around 1930
Kind regards
Stéphane

Hello Stéphane,
Thanks for your contribution.

Just to put this straight: The photo was taken in May 1940 according to the note on the back of the print.

Hence, it is unlikely that this image was shot in 1930, as you suggest.

What particular evidence speaks for Charleville Mezière as the location where this picture was taken?

Thanks and regards
Michael

I would suspect this to be an OHC model, equipped for speed/durability. There is evidence that there were SELECT collections of vehicles, both 2 and 4 wheels, that assisted in the transport of refugees(Jewish and others) from Germany, seeking asylum through France or through Italy.

Definitely a top of the range Chenard with its wire wheels, Houdaille shock absorbers and right hand drive. The exhausteur also seems to be on the right hand side suggesting that the carburettor may also have been on that side of the engine or perhaps at the back of the block as some of them were. The 3-litre sohc engine had its carburettor on the left hand side so I don't think it was one of those. The shape of the cover at the top of the engine would be definitive but the photo is too fuzzy to see that clearly.

Well, actually I managed to identify at least the brand of the car myself in the meantime. But knowing the exact model, would be great, of course!
I still have quite a number of "really" difficult cases in my photo collection where I will have to ask for your advice!

I used to own one of these Chenard Walker models. It looks to me to be a 2 litre overhead cam model from 1924.

Looks to me like 1923 -25 Type U 3 litre (overhead cam) - similar to winner of 1923 Le Mans 24hr.. Also similar to first pictures on Club website as driven by Ballot in GP. I have a 1920 side-valve equivalent..
