Just as always when we receive a photo for the quiz, we check the Georgano car bible. Also when we received the photo from our friend Hans van Ingen Schenau that we used for Quiz #481, we first looked at this book and found exactly this photo (in black and white) with "1900 La Va Bon Train 8 hp Voiturette" written under it. The same as was written on the back of the postcard.
But when we received the answers to this quiz, most said 1904 and when we checked the sources, this was indeed correct. So we want to thank you for helping us!
The first one with a good answer was Robbie Marenzi, who also gave us a copy of an old advert "1904 La Va Bon Train ("goes like blazes") manufactured by Larroumet and Lagarde of Agen, Lot-et-Garonne between 1904 and 1914. Founded in 1891 as a bicycle maker. It featured an iron chassis, wheel steering, Larroumet single-cylinder 8 CV or at extra cost a De Dion engine. Two-speed epicyclic gearbox on early cars, later a more conventional unit was fitted, final drive was by belt or chain. A differential was fitted from 1907. Between 50 and 100 are believed to have been built. This car can be seen at the Chateau de Grandson in Switzerland."
Jaap ter Linden, Neil Beadle, Fried Stol, Fredy Ley and Rinero Serge confirmed this. Lars Legaard thought it was a Lacroix but unfortunately, this is not correct.
Ace Zenek said it was claimed to be capable of having a top speed of 80 km/h. Brrr... that will be a dangerous ride! He also added to earlier info: "Cost was 2000 francs and the hood was optional (140 francs). Two-day driving course provided when picked up from the factory. Production between 42 and 100 with three known. The name means “Goes like mad.”
According to a regular competitor (and winner) Gerd Klioba, this particular car is number 40.
Thank you all for competing. As there can be only one winner, it was Ace Zenek who gave us the most extra information and therefore he is this week's winner of the quiz, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars.
Congratulations Ace!
Everybody good luck next week with the Veteran Car run. See you in Brighton!
