An Italian made in France

It’s not uncommon when Artcurial comes up with several exceptional French cars for their auctions. But we were pleased to see this Italian FIAT Balilla that was made in France. It was built by SAFAF, later Simca, who also produced the French version of the lovely Topolino. This one is a 1934 508 S Balilla Sport Coppa d'Oro, the sporting version of a rather traditional mass-built saloon. No doubt that the 508S flowing lines were copied from the 8C Alfa Romeo, which certainly helped it sell. It even became a rival for the British MG’s and Singers. We have heard it say that the Balilla was named after a young boy that started a revolution in Genova in the 19th century by throwing stones at the Austrian occupiers. And considering the times it’s no wonder that a fascist youth organization also called itself by that name. Anyway, this 508 S looks very pretty with its green leather upholstery and we have no doubt that it will be a quick sale at Artcurial’s next auction, tomorrow in Deauville.
