Bare chassis joy at RM Amelia.

Coming Saturday's auction by RM at Amelia Island has lots of super cars to offer. But don't let blind yourself by the Talbot Lago, two Duesenbergs and the endless list of automotive dreams. Check between the lines and you'll find a type of car that easily can be overlooked. The early Roadsters! Despite their age, despite their roaring cough, they are the winners to be. Behind our prewar desk we see a growing demand for the untamed early two-seaters. Cars that were not much more than chassis/engine + two bucket seats and a barrel of gas behind. The unfiltered fun these 'unconvertibles' bring is again more and more appreciated. RM's Amelia auction will show a tasty selection... Above the icon of its decade, a 1915 Stutz 'Bearcat' with a list of concours palmares in its file, yet capable for modern highway speeds, hill climbs and more. Candidate nr. 2 is a 1912 Simplex Double Roadster, an ancient example of 'time-sharing' or better say fun sharing. The very powerful Simplex easily accommodates for two extra bucket seats without loosing its Roadster character. Are we getting over the horizon of your budget? Well hidden in the online catalogue we found this nicely patinated 1909 Hupmobile Runabaout in need of a sympathetic restoration. So at a humble estimate. (photos courtesy RM Auctions)
