Base coating for the Lancia Lambda

I am currently restoring a 1928 Lancia Lambda. As most pre-war cars do have an orange/red base coating, I found an example of what seems to be an original Lambda (never resprayed) which seems to have a white coating of the bare metal. The owner did not want me to take off all the original coating to see what is underneath. Surprising. Could this be some phosphorus coating used in those days by Lancia to prime the bare metal for further spraying?
Can anyone tell me what coating Lancia did use in the twenties?

Nice to hear from you. I am well aware of (most of the history) of the car. It is truly a great car. I bought it from Peter Giddings some two years ago and have driven it to Turin for the celebrations of the 100 years Lambda by the Italian club.
Planing to drive again this year for the international celebrations which have been postponed.
Actually, I did get this picture from the US Lancia Club, however I would be thrilled if you have more pictures or information on the car.
Sadly it does need a respray, some idiots did put a cover over it an attached it with duck tape which they took off with the paint.

I don't know what makes you believe that "most pre-war cars do have an orange/red base coating" (none of my cars with original paint from the 1920s and 30s has), but if you want a really professional opinion, Mrs. Gundula Tutt is the woman who is probably most familiar with prewar car paint: https://omnia-online.jimdofree.com/kontakt/

NB: It was the restoration company (Classic Skills) who told me that all the cars they see do have orange/red base coat.

A terrific car - it was driven hard for tens of thousands of miles by us and sold to Peter Giddings in the USA.
