Hello, I am looking for any information about this beautiful steering wheel that I have recently purchased. It measures 44cm in diameter and has a maker’s stamp on one spoke. Very similar to a René Thomas but much lighter and with a distinctive shape to the spokes. It is stamped ‘Bertfort’s Bte S.G.D.G No. 1604’. I can’t find anything online and have never seen another. I will fit it onto my GS8 Salmson.
This type of wheel is a 1927 wheel, I am absolutely sure. Bertfort’s was a small French company mostly producing for other companies (mostly shock absorbers). It produced steering wheel components, but also it tried to make its own branding, which was mostly unsuccessful. As it consisted of too much aluminium and was not rigid enough, it was for instance not allowed in many countries. At the 1927 French salon automobile, the company had it’s own stand. Probably only around 200 of these wheels were produced. I would be interested if anyone has a second one!
