Bockwurst , Bier und Benzes !
( UPDATE II: a professional organisation)

The very first car sold at last weekend's Essen show was a Bellanger inspired special (Steenbuck). It left the showgrounds early Thursday morning and it was not the last car to leave. Though some big dealers said the market was weak, we saw cars leaving the premises all the time. Ranging from an attractively priced Alvis Speed 25 DHC (offered by Ian LeRiche), Bugatti Type 43 (Bernard Marreyt) up to postwar wheels like a Borgward convertible (E.Thiesen), Jaguar Mk IX (Clasicos de Mos), flocks of fifties & sixties Benzes and a Lamborghini Miura. The cheerfull atmosphere plus super spring wheather did help a lot in that respect and led the visitors to long stays at the outdoor markets with Beck's & bockwurst (oversized beers and XL hotdogs) served in the shade (click). The outside photo gives a good view on Essen's everyday classics; hiding from left to right: a Ferrari 308 GTS, a 1938 Adler Trumpf, 1965 Mercedes O-319 small bus and Mercedes W123 hearse. As usual the buyers are outnumbered with a factor one-hundred at least by the visitors who merely came to savour the automotive oppulence and beauty. We saw truckloads of great cars and so much automobilia that we faced problems taking it all in (we loved this Aero inspired mascot (offered by Viklit Graae Jorgensen). We are glad that many of you found their way to our stand. In fact, there were so many cars we liked, that it’s difficult to pick a favourite. But when pressed, we think this 1908 Mercedes GP recreation is a very likely candidate. With the painstaking perfection of the Daimler Benz restoration team the whole presentation and every detail of the 13,5 litre monster was superb. So yes - contrary to what you would think of 'Das Haus' - the paintwork was applied with deliberate and well thought off scruffyness, as with with the original.
All in all without doubt Europe's greatest indoor show, with just one scratch in the paintwork, one point of criticism to the Dutch organisers. To reconsider their deep greed. By charging full throttle for even the tiniest piece of paper, for delivering flimsy service, and for the lousiest presented 'flash dinner' in ages. Open your eyes for the needs of the small wallet exposers. We have seen a lot of frustration in that area. So come on boys, show some flex and a smile next year, it won't bring you poverty. JB

UPDATE II by Pieter & Arnoud van der Sman: "We expose at the Techno Classica now for 21 years and before that 11 years on the Essen Motorshow. We think SIHA is a good professional organisation that always deliverd what they promised. We would really like to see that other organisers show this level professionalism."
.....Editor: Of course an event of this magnitude will always produce different views and opinions. Though we are quite postive about the event in general, we still think the organisers could give a lot more attention to the needs of their exposers."
UPDATE I: Michael Hortig reports:"This car is not only a recreation, it was built around many original components. And indeed the colour is right !"
