Cabriolet Matford V8 de 1936 retrouvé en Virginie, U.S.A.

Neil "The Virginian" a trouvé une Ford V8 française ! Il écrit :

Bonjour.

The Matford company disappeared during the Second World War.
The Mathis S.A. company was reconstituted on September 19th, 1945.
The Simca company was created in 1934.
The Simca company bought Ford France in 1954.

I always wondered why the Simca Vedette (or Beaulieu) ended up with a Ford V8 60 engine. I guess the Simca takeover of Matford explains this. Sweet engine!

I know it's been a long time since anyone commented on this thread, but I just found it. I also have a Matford. Mine is a 1936 Alsaice, 4dr sedan. I got it from an old friend of mine a couple of years ago and he owned it since 1952. At that time he got it out a junk yard. It's been inside since 52 and is in remarkably good condition. Mine also has had the original V8-60 replaced with a slightly newer V8. It's a 1937 80HP with dual carbs, solid lifters and a mild cam. He said it didn't make it any faster, just louder. I haven't started work on it yet, just interested it any info I can get. Any input or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks
Rick

Hello: I leave in Ohio. I own a 1936 Matford cabriolet. Yours appears to be a roadster.Mine has a back seat and a trunk instead of a rumble seat. The back glass in my top appears to be smaller.I street rodded mine retaining original top bows and rear window size and trim.It is nice to know there is another one in the U.S.Mine was brought over in the early 70s i was told. I bought it in 1996.

I also can help with Matford info. There were two Matford models sold in france from 1935 until war broke out in 1939. One was manufactured by Mathis and the other was inported from Ford in the USA. Both carried the Matford name, but they are completely different cars. I have seen and driven both and have contacts for you. Email me at [email protected] if you want to learn more.

Matford, a joint venture between Ford and Mathis, sold cars with the Matford label. One model was produced in France by Mathis. Another was Fords produced in the US and imported. Matfords were sold from about 1935 until war broke out in 1939. Heil's car is the US import version. Email if you want more info on Matford or contacts in France that are well informed about Matfords and own them.

I just received clarification on the engine. As stated, it's been replaced. There is a data plate on it that says "remanufactured engine by Simca of Poissy" and a serial number. It also indicates that its an "F59A". A "59A" would be a 1945 Ford (USA) flathead v-8. The F prefix indicates that it was a French produced engine.
Additional pictures will be forthcoming, though I'll have to figure out how to add them as it's not clear.
It's understood that Simca is the successor to Mathis/Matford and that Ford owned 15% for a couple years when Simca assumed possession of the factory in Poissy. Ford subsequently sold the remaining 15%.

Thank you very much for the replies, we will be following up on the leads that were provided. I say "we" as the car belongs to my wife's parents and they may post in here discussing it, as well.

Francois, I was unable to view the pic with the webpage saying that it no longer exists

Kit, they have found that it's not the original engine, and I think he said it's a 50's model. I will follow up with some additional photos for conversation.

Arnoud, keen eye! Maybe you will have some other insights with more pictures

Colin, I can't find how to privately message or e-mail you. I will continue looking.

Editor: If you both send your email addresses to office*at*prewarcar.com, we'll make sure you'll get in contact with each other.

On the last picture is a tipical French side turnsignal light: the Scintex V51.
I do think these were available as an after-matket product in the US.
these Scintex lights were first produced in 1952 , this makes me believe this car was still in france in the (early) 50's.
So I do not think is was shipped to the USA at the end of WWII.

A Model 62 should have the 2.2 litre "60 hp" engine. Can we see an engine shot, please? That is probably the major deviation from US specification, and it would be interesting to see if there are differences from the US "V8-60" engine that appeared in 1937. Otherwise, many US 1936 parts may fit.

As for production, one would probably need Ford-France (successor to Matford who sold out to Simca) records. Try the CAAPY Museum at Poissy: http://www.caapy.net/
