Can you identify this tachometer?

Letters to the editor

I wonder if anyone can identify what vehicle this tachometer is from.

  • It is made by Jaeger
  • It says RN1407/00 on the face
  • It is cable-driven
  • The diameter is five inches (12.7 m.m.)
  • Interestingly, it only measures up to 2,000 r.p.m.
Have you any idea what it might be from?  If not, are there any other sources I can investigate? General internet searches seem to be blank on this particular one.

Thanks in advance.

I cannot offer a definite identification but some clues.

The shape of the dial, like the bottom half of a torus or doughnut, is identical to that used on MG TD and Triumph TR2/3/4 tachometers. With different markings on the dial of course. Therefore this British Jaeger tachometer was probably made in the 1950s or 1960s.

The rpm range is typical of diesel engines used on lorries (trucks) and buses. Engines that do more than 1000 rpm are classed as high-speed engines.

There are a number of engines from this period and beyond that might fit. For example a Gardner 6LW with 102 hp at 1700 rpm.

I am no expert, but, in my limited experience, an rpm range like this is often seen with marine engine use.
