Chasing trains (Upd. not a 7.4-litre but 11.5 litre T-head six? )

Races between cars and trains have always been a popular subject for artists. The first that springs to mind is Terence Cuneo’s impressive painting of Woolf Barnato’s Bentley Speed Six chasing the Blue train from Cannes to Calais. But this is also a very dramatic scene: a 1910 4-cylinder Oldsmobile racing the 20th Century Limited from Albany to New York. This one was painted by William Hornden Foster for an Oldsmobile advertising campaign. We saw this very suggestive lithograph in the catalogue of Bonhams Auction during the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance on June 5th.

The dimensions were 5" x 6", giving an engine of 707 cid, around 11.5 litres, one of the biggest regular production automobile engines. The Autocrat model had four cylinders of the same dimensions.

Hate to be critical, but the Oldsmobile Limited was powered by an enormous 6 cylinder T-head motor, not a 4. I had one and sold it so a seventh surviving Limited could be assembled.
