Denmark to Darjeeling India per Standard Avon

Very similar to the Standard car shown last week. Eugenio Lai from Denmark knows his trip-trip grandfathers brother Eigil Møller owned a 1907-08 Standard Avon Roi de Belge. And he used it like it should be! He went from Denmark to Darjeeling in India near to the Nepal border in the beginning of the century, and started a tea farm as the first in the highlands. He was successful in this and came back in 1917-18 with the car for a family holiday in Denmark. We are talking about a 6000 mile trip (one way) only a few years after Peking-Paris. It is hard to imagine how people did this. Suppose they did 300 miles a day (which is a lot) it still is a three week journey. Too bad there are further reports about this trip that probably was not very easy. However we found the building of 'highways' in Darjeeling started at least around 1900.  At the same time we start to understand from where the other interst of Eugenio Lai came from; see Kegresse.dk.

Sorry, I am confused. The car was shipped from where and then back? Looking at the car's registration it certainly fits to have been registered in NE India. All early cars In Kolkatta and regions around were registered with numbers, no letters, and these went upto 5 digits. This went on to the 1920's, I don't know when they switched over to the BLA series.
Many many people have travelled by car from Europe to India, there were probably 2 Skoda one DKW expedition, and countless individuals too. I believe that even a Kergresse expedition went to the Himalayas. The land route normally taken was to reach Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and to India. In the 1060's and 1970's 1000's of "Hippies" travelled this route, later political unstability killed off this scenic drive. Ofcourse roads and fascilities were much better then, but a good lot of such drives did take place.
And, that is a lovely photo, are there any more? Regards, Harit

The use of the word Avon in the name is - I think - a mistake. I am not an expert on this make but I think that the Avon model name was only used on a sporting version built in the early 1930s - with bodies built by Avon - a coachbuilder.
