Writer Rudy Kousbroek passed away Easter morning

Rudy Kousbroek has died aged eighty. Not only a great essayist, he was also an afficionado of fine (especially French) motorcars and a personal friend of Gabriel Voisin. Read for instance his  The Abstract Beauty of Voisin’s designs, published here in 2004. Rudy was without knowing so a great inspirer for this website. (see also The Lake of Remembrance)

I offer some added remarks about this great Voisin car. The engine photo shows it is a 12 cylinder inline, not a V shape engine.
Also this was a sleeve valve engine (no poppet valves to make noise).
The sleeve valve engines were mainly used by upper class cars because of their silence due to the sleeve mechanism being bathed in lots of oil. The allowed RPMs were not very high.
They all left a visible exhaust smoke and due to their RPM limitations they could not compete with more powerful engines eventually .

Rudy Kousbroek can be read in English. He wrote about Gabriel Voisin in (Twelve) Great designers and their work edited by Ronald Barker and Anthony Harding (first edition 1970, second edition 1992).
