As Veteran veneration sweeps the old-car world in the build-up to the spectacular Brighton Run, some will no doubt be wondering how it all began. Of course, everyone knows the story of the Red Flag Act and the 1896 Emancipation Run, but in many ways that was merely incidental to the world-renowned phenomenon that we enjoy today.
We are at the Red Dust Revival, held under the auspices of the Lake Perkolilli Motor Sports Club Incorporated, where daredevils have been racing on the dry clay lakebed since 1914, for this the third modern re-enactment of the bygone glories of the Lake. The last time I was here was for the Centenary event in 2014 and this is the first official racing since then, though of course the locals will come out every now and then and ‘hoon’ around the track still easily identified amongst the salt-bush.
It is now a year ago that 25 PreWarCars took part in The Peaks of the Caucasus - the first (all) PreWarCar rally in Georgia. An event bringing the cars high into the Caucasus, towards the Russian border and through the semi-desert towards the Azeri border. But also from the rock-hewn monasteries near Armenia to the wine cellars preserving an 8000 years old tradition of winemaking.
Perhaps it’s better to avoid Rolls-Royce Ghosts today. Or perhaps not. Their name oozes people who are looking for an All Hallows' Eve. But the earliest of Rolls-Royces thanked its name to its ghostly silence and its silver paint, making its appearance like that of a ghost. The noble British motor manufacturer remained faithful to its occult origins after that, with its Phantoms and Spirits.
Wow. There is a lot to see in this image. Let’s start with the street itself. The Belfast Bank is clearly visible, which certainly helps in putting a location to it. It’s not this famous Belfast Bank building, though, almost fully destroyed in a devastating fire last year. Is it Belfast at all? It isn’t. A bit more sleuthing teaches us that the Thompson Victoria Hotel was located in Strabane, northern-Ireland and – yes – the Belfast Bank had a branch next to that. Do these buildings survive?
Tomorrow is the day where many veteran car enthusiasts from all over the world have been waiting for. The first weekend of November you spend in London! To meet up with your friends, bid in the auction, go to the pub, maybe already do some Christmas shopping but merely for... the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run!
Just like Christmas, this has become for many a tradition. If you are not able to participate yourself this year, for whatever reason, you are without a doubt already looking forward to next year's event!
We from PreWarCar.com are of course also present this year. Perhaps you have already seen the PreWarCar.com advert on the back of your programme. We would very much like to wish everyone good luck tomorrow! Have fun guys and we hope to see you all at Madeira Drive in Brighton!
Today's footage shows the start of 'The Great Rally' in Hyde Park back in 1965. But also the run itself reported and filmed from the back of a 1904 Alldays & Onion. It is always fun if you come across old footage from cars you have driven yourself. Maybe next year we can imitate the video. One of our staff can stand on the back of the Alldays with a tripod and camera to do live report!
