Martin Shelley writes: "a close friend (Alastair Alexander) who is into old bikes has recently stumbled across an interesting early car part, in the shape of a chassis-mounted, chain driven differential. I think it may be from an early de Dion-engined veteran car or possibly from a slightly later cyclecar which would have had a motorcycle engine and gearbox. Its mounting looks to be suitable for a transverse tubular chassis rail which suggests an early light car of some sort with cardan shafts to a de Dion type rear axle. It would be pleasing to find out what it is from. " (measurements and specs below)
Sprocket has 38 teeth and is 9mm thick and a diameter of 20cm. The shaft to which it would be bolted by 4 studs has a diameter of 32mm. The 4 studs are at 90 mm centres in line with the shaft and 63mm transverse to it. The big dimensions of the differential box are approximately 21.5 cm long by 14cm wide. The drive shafts have an external diameter of 29mm and an internal diameter of 24mm. The length of the drive shaft from the edge of the pot and trunnion coupling to the end of the drive shaft is approx. 22.5cm. The overall weight is just under 10kg. The 4 studs at the back of the differential are all at 10cm centres.
I have had one of these for some 26 years.
Like you I have no idea what it is from!
But would also like to know!!!
