The Amelia Island Concours near Jacksonville Florida is a relevation - almost a culture shock - for a European first-timer like your editor. Automobiles that you have seen in books and magazines all your life, but never 'in the flesh', come rolling in with dozens and dozens and dozens. Like the pristine Milburn Light Electric with its most charming chauffeur (click photo), who together own the future in more than one way. The day prior to the Concours was the spectacular auction by RM. In our view the highlight was the 1941 Chrysler Indianapolus Pacecar with 'stains of honour' getting a pre-auction touch up by the owner, who later that day could cash US$ 600,000. Only minutes before the concours judges arrived a last minute polishing was applied to the most glamorous Voisin motorcars of all, the sleeveless V-12 1931 C20 Demi-Berline (tuned by Classic & Exotic Services). Newcomer at this event was the - paint still wet - 1911 Knox Type R Roadster presented by Mort & Susan Huber. At the Concours even a presumably non existent car turned up, found after a search-hunt of decades by Jim Stecker: the 1930 Jordan Speedway Z Ace Roadster. To our surprise also the centennial celebrating Cole turned up. Not exactly what you expect on a Concours but most welcome is a barnfound Miller racer. But most spectacular of all is the car that was etched in the editor's memory some 30 years ago and that suddenly came whispering by... the Bohman & Schwarz bodied Cord... . And yes of course we made a run to show you the awesome face(click) as well. One postwar car we don't want to keep away from you. It is post-futuristic, or should we say a pre Martian war car..? Check the dome of the 1964 Orbitron and of course the full concept.
Thank you Amelia for inviting us to this superior event!
Hope to meet again March 12-14, 2010.
Update by Ced Pearce: "...isn't this known as the 'Phantom Corsair' - custom built for Russ Heinz? Admittedly on Cord running gear."
