Autumn is with us now, and for all the beauty of the golden leaves and the crispy, frosty mornings, there’s no denying that the long, cold nights can be a bit of a drag. If you’re lucky enough to have a heated, well-lit garage, it might not be so bad – you can spend your evenings overhauling your car ready for the next rally season without losing feeling in your fingers.
Wait just a minute, though – you don’t want your car to be off the road all winter, when the most thrilling pre-war motoring is to be done. Wait just a few months longer, because you don’t want to miss the 100 Miles night rally, which this year will take place in Bruges on 16th December.
Last year, participants in the 100 Miles received a warm welcome in Ypres, which was about the only warm thing in a rally which took place at temperatures of minus eight degrees centigrade. As the deserted country roads of Flanders proved to be so well-suited to the occasion, this year it seemed logical to move the rally a little north to the beautiful mediæval city of Bruges, often described as the Venice of the North on account of how the tranquil Dijver canal divides its cobbled streets.
Since the 100 Miles, held in the freezing cold on pitch black roads, is a gruelling enough test of human and mechanical endurance in itself, participants will be granted one last taste of comfort and luxury before they set off, the starting point being the four-star Weinebrugge hotel just outside Bruges where, after scrutineering, all will be invited to a warming dinner. The rally will start at 8.00 p.m. and head off through some of Belgium’s most scenic countryside, with a few extra challenges along the way, plus some rest stops at special locations. When you arrive back in Bruges, you can swap notes over a certain Belgian beverage which will warm the heart, though it may be served ice-cold…
If this is something you’d enjoy, register for it now by following this link. As with previous 100 Miles, there is a limit of 50 cars, and if you wish to book a room at the Weinebrugge than you have until 30th October to do so.
Registration for The 100 Miles of Bruges costs €525 (approx. £455) and includes:
