We don’t know what to make of this bus or dare we say ‘royal monstrosity’. David Greenlees found it on a postcard published by “Pearson's Studio, Newton Heath, Manchester 10” and on the card it is described as "Manchester's Illuminated Bus". Obviously the bus was made especially for the coronation of King George VI(other side of bus) and Queen Elisabeth on May 12th, 1937. But that’s all we can tell about it… can you fill in the gaps in our knowledge? What’s the make of this bus? Did it drive on the streets of Manchester? Was it used in a Coronation parade? Maybe someone was actually there in Manchester and remembers?
Looking up the details in The Manchester Bus by Eyre and Heaps it was withdrawn from service in 1937 but remained in use as an illuminated display vehicle. It was put back in service in 1941 before becoming a mobile canteen in 1943. It was finally sold and became a caravan in 1949.
