For Official Use Only!

Just imagine for a moment that you are an Italian Prince. It’s the end of the 1930’s and you’re in the market for a super-duper car. What would you choose? As it happens, Fiat has just introduced its 2800 model, targeted at the very richest and wealthiest pre-war European elite. But that’s not enough for you, you want more. Luckily for you Farina of Turin clothed a limited number of these Fiats as a Drophead Dual Cowl Phaeton. So that’s what the Prince of Piemonte ordered. After the war the Fiat remained in official use until 1963. Now this unrestored 1939 Phaeton will be offered by Coys during their Monaco Auction on May 18th. According to them the car was used to transport many illustrious people: Pope Pious XII, Benito Mussolini as well as his mistress Claretta Petacci and even by Adolf Hitler and General Franco when they visited Rome. Think you are a prince too? Then have a look at lot 257! (photos courtesy Coys)
