Doctors only? (update: no doctor's! "three-quarter folding head coupe")

There are many model designations, but what exactly makes a car a Doctors Coupe? Was it only to be used by doctors? Perhaps it was named so because this model with only two seats and a trunk could be easily used by country doctors? But maybe you can come up with a better reason?

Anyway, we saw this 1929 Lea Francis 12/40 'P' type Doctors Coupe in true barn find but reasonable condition at Richard Edmonds, who will offer it during their auction on Friday, August 2. The auction will be held at Toddington Railway Station, Gloucestershire, a very attractive location which is only seven miles from Prescott, where that same weekend the VSCC will have their annual Hill Climb. We think this could work both ways... for the visitor to the VSCC event it will be easy to visit the auction, but also if you have a pre-war car or a VSCC eligible motorcar for sale, why not enter it at Edmonds, as there surely will be many spectators.

I always understood that the term goes right back to when doctors wore extremely tall top hats hence the high roof line. [I am not joking].

The P-type Lea-Francis that the auctioneer describes as a "Doctor's Coupé" is what we in the Lea-Francis O.C. describe as a drophead coupé.
The Lea-Francis catalogue described it as a three-quarter folding head coupe and it was built by Cross & Ellis.
A Doctor's Coupé should not be a drophead but have a fixed roof and 2 enclosed seats in front of an extended boot which held the medical supplies.

I cannot answer what makes a Doctor's coupé, but here is an Alvis advert from 1926...

...and you will also find current photos of my Coupé here...

On my car there is a large closed box area behind the front seat where a doctor's Gladstone bag could be hidden from sight.

I shall be interested to hear what the real reason for the term was.

Thanks as ever for an interesting daily fix (if you'll pardon the pun)

Regards

Bruce
