From the family album: white mystery sports car

Stan Allen's cousin found this photograph of his father sitting behind the wheel of a 2-door sports saloon. The photograph is taken in Australia, probably somewhere around 1938. He is curious to know the year and make of the vehicle for his family tree.

Does anybody know what car we are looking at? And is this car with license 36-532, still around? Please, leave a comment if you know more. Hopefully, together we can solve this problem.

I am inclined to think it is a Dixi. The grille and badge look like those of pre 1940 BMW's. It's a pity there isn't more than just the one photo. A different aspect may clarify the situation

I would say that it is an Austin 7 Wasp. Normally the Wasp did not have the division down the centre of the radiator shell and they had a false cover at the bottom to make them look like it covered half eliptic springs - which of course an A7 did not have. It looks that it has been modified in later life - the front guards having valances fitted along with a front bumper bar. The rest of the car - the front and rear guards, the tail, windscreen are pure Wasp.

About 3-4 years ago, I just missed out on an almost identically bodied 1930's Standard. That front is very familiar. I think it went to Queensland.

Dixi started to build Austin Sevens under agreement with mirror image engines and LH drive in 1928, bodies similar to the UK 7's. These became BMW's in 1929 and the agreement was cancelled in 1932.
There were no Sports bodied Dixi's or BMW's, although later BMW Sports 7's were built on earlier chassis with the kidney radiator cowl.
I think the pictured car is an Australian bodied special.

May be a BMW Dixi (Also called BMW Wartburg?). Dixi made Austin Seven under licence in Germany and was bought by BMW in 1928. I guess the very first Dixi where based on Austin Seven... Specialists wanted!

Looks like a 1930's Austin 7 Special - there were lots of local body builders.

I guess it's not a BMW but it certainly wants to be.
