Genevieve - La voiture l’ancêtre la plus emblématique?
L'une des voitures qui a marqué la course de voitures anciennes de Londres à Brighton le plus est sans doute une Darracq 12hp de 1904, une voiture portant le nom de Geneviève.
La voiture a ëté retrouvée juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans une haie à côté d'un pont à Londres, elle a été vendue pour 25 £ et transformée en voiture de travail. Ensuite elle a été revendue, restaurée et surnommée "Annie". Peu de temps après, elle était la vedette du film "Geneviève" de 1953, dans lequel la petite Darracq bicylindre affrontait une Spyker néerlandaise de 1905 lors du week-end des voitures anciennes de Londres à Brighton. La voiture est devenue l'ambassadrice des voitures anciennes et a changé de nombreuses vies.
Maintenant la Spyker et la Darracq font partie de l'impressionnante collection du musée Louwman à La Haye, aux Pays-Bas, et notre équipe s'y est rendue pour la voir et filmer la voiture avant qu'elle ne se rende à la semaine des voitures anciennes 2022 de Londres à Brighton.

The film isn't just about the London to Brighton run. It's really about Britain finally recovering from the war years. Note the new buildings being built, truckloads of new Morris Minors, the paving over of the tram tracks (bad idea, by the way) and the fact that she comes home with a bag of onions and so forth. As I understand, onions were unavailable during the war. One more thing, imagine the rent you would have to pay on that mews apartment today!

First time I saw the film was probably in the mid 50s and I loved it. I was already hooked on old cars.
However, I watched the film again last week and was very disappointed. For the whole length of the film there was bickering between husband and wife (played by John Gregson and Dinah Sheridan). I wanted to shout 'divorce' at them.
I am still hooked on old cars, though.
The real London to Brighton has always run in November but in the film it must be summer. Trees are green, the sun is shining and people are wearing short sleeves and no coats. Yes, it rains, but that's the British summer!
