Gentleman Heroes: a New Chapter of Friday Ladies ?

Let's be realistic.  We don't actually live in pre-war times. Look at your smartphone, this is 2016. Showing a quality motorcar with lovely lady leaning or lying on the paintwork may be a long passed station. So after 15 years bringing you various - well clad - lady motorists we decided to start a new chapter with Gentleman Heroes. Like this man of stature and bravour  (no, now don't dwell off with your thoughts to Emma Peel's Lotus Elan) better think of the bright yellow motor from Crew that our sixties detective is using to get to work.

Then think it over and send us your opinion. What should be the object of our future Friday features......?    Lovely Ladies or Gentleman Heroes?

Maybe it was an April Fool joke, but seriously, why not guys like Gable, Valentino and his Isotta-Fraschini and so forth. Jean Harlow posed with a Packard touring car as I recall. In the film, "The Mayor of Hell Town," James Cagney drove an Auburn convertible that was his own personal car and that car was at the Meadowbrook show in Michigan a few years ago. So, why not?

OK, you got me. I thought you were bending over backwards to be too politically correct, but thankfully not. So, back to normal enjoying great cars, fine food and best of all, women with good spirit. I hope that is still OK.

Please use the word hero in a correct and respectful manner. Heroes are those who put their life on the line to protect and save us. Some pay a horrible price for this. TV and movie actors are not heroes. They just play the part of one. There are no sports heroes. There are athletes who excel at their sport at a defining moment of victory.
How about paying more tribute to the great female racing drivers of the pre war era? These women had interesting histories in the sport and drove some fine cars. It would be good to learn more about what they contributed to this exciting era.
As for pretty girls posing with cars, there is nothing wrong with this. The beauty of the female figure will never go out of style. In the 1930's the clothes got more form fitting and revealing plus makeup became popular. Holley Wood had something to do with this by introducing the 'pin up girls'. These were promotional photos of their film stars nicely posed and clothed. This was the golden era of films and glamour. The introduction of the one piece bathing suit added to the popularity of pin up girl photography. This became an art form of it's own and is being done again. Yes the girls were showing their curves and to see some posing with curvy cars is a bonus.

Steve: I agree almost completely with you. Not too many of our readers took note of the fact that we published this feature on April 1, so it was meant sort of tongue in cheek. JB

Why not Gary Cooper? he loved his Duesenbergs. As well as Gable, McQueen, Newman.I once saw both Duesenberg SSJs, both made for Cooper and Gable, they were something! Bogart had an early Thunderbird, amongst others.

I'm in favour of that Richard Campbell, having owned one of the Lawrence of Arabia Armoured Ghosts, and currently own The Great Gatsby Ghost - just a coincidence!

Why not a theme of Great Location Shots. The Lotus in The Prisoner in London, Mustang in San Francisco, Minis in Rome - et al.

A very small nit. The car picture would have been from Derby not Crewe. Production didn't move there until after the war.

I always enjoy the lovely Ladies, but I agree with Mr. Campbell. Alternating with classy Gentlemen is a nice idea! Happy Motoring!

And a subject about amphibious cars ? Like the Unicorn of M. Ulysse... Texier de la Caillerie. It's good for catching big fishes.

I think a temporary shift to Gentleman would be a great idea. (Robert Redford with a 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I from The Great Gatsby, or Peter O'Toole with a 1920 Rolls-Royce Silver from Lawrence of Arabia.)
