Have you seen the results of the 2018 Monterey auction? The 250 GTO sold for no less than 48.4 million Dollars, an Aston Martin DP215 for 21,4 million Dollars but also the pre-war cars achieved astonishing prices. The 1935 Duesenberg SSJ became the most expensive American car and sold for 22.000.000 Dollars.
We hope those cars will be on the public roads every now and then, but we are afraid it will only drive on the lawns of a Concours and that’s it. That makes other auctions more interesting for the real ‘drivers’. The next auction will be in Auburn, where Worldwide Auctioneers will have their sale. Nearly 100 cars will be sold without reserve! Yes, the chance to get yourself a car to drive.
But with 100 cars, it is still a challenge to find the right one for you. We chose our 3 favourites:
1912 Oldsmobile Defender Speedster
What to think of this 1912 Oldsmobile Defender Speedster. We love brass! Although not the most powerful car in the auction and certainly not the most comfortable one, this car looks to be fun to drive. Having the wind in your hair, race glasses on and just tour around and show the Model T’s your rear end.
1930 Cadillac V16
Something completely different is this 1930 Cadillac V16. Yes, 4 times as many cylinders as the Olds has. This car is much more relaxing, comfortable and for the longer tours. You can go from coast to coast without noticing you are driving an old car. The car has a closed Coupe body, which makes your hair stay as before, even after driving, and no glasses needed! Well, if that isn’t a big benefit (at least for your partner).
Auburn Model 8-105
And as the auction is in Auburn, you can get yourself an Auburn as well. Quite a few are being sold, but we like this Auburn Model 8-105 most. First of all, it is a convertible (the missis likes old cars as well, so no problem with wind in her hair). Secondly, the car has a powerful eight-cylinder engine (100HP) and overdrive, which makes it ideal to cruise.
Our conclusion after seeing the cars at the Auburn sale is that it is still possible to buy a car to drive and use, instead of being afraid to use it on the public roads. We do hope you will. Just as we do, keep using your pre-war car! And of course, let us know if you bought one, we are looking forward to the photographs!
