This may be an ordinary Paris cop holding up traffic, yet his ear to ear grin says there is something in the air. The collection of vehicles seems rather odd, is it a race to see which means of transport is quickest in the Paris rush hour? Up to you to tell us in one catchy phrase what is happening here. He (or she) who comes up with the nicest headline will be rewarded with a PreWarCar brass badge.
Update by Editor: See the comments box for all the responses we received, but we just had to go with the answer by James Helms, who preferred the original caption "An Exposition of Modern Transport" from the 1940's magazine in which this photograph was originally published.
One has to admire the physical strength required of the Velocar ladies (self propulsion units w/pedals right and left) and the velo taxi "driver". However the photo doesn't include gazogene, city gas, nor electric vehicles which are discussed in a number of articles and there is a 5 page article titled "La Réhabilitation de la Bicyclette which has a lead photo of approximately a dozen bicyclist titled "Arret devant un passage clouté, a Paris" as they wait for pedestrians to cross at the crosswalk. Not surprisingly bicycle shops were not short of customers.
On page 165 of L'Ilustration is a interesting chart/illustration comparing the cost and time required to cover 100 kilometers based on fuel uesd:
Fuel Amount Cost Duration
gasoline 10 litres 55 F 1.4 hours
alcohol 14 litres 77 F 1.4 hours
benzene 9 litres 52.25 F 1.4 hours
wood 27 kilos 13.10 F 2.13 hours
charcoal 15 kilos 27.15 F 2.0 hours
city gas 20 cu. meters 35 F 2.0 hours
electricity 22.2 kWh 7.75 F 3.2 hours
There are qualifiers for each of the above such as benzene is vary rare and vehicle weights, performance, etc. vary depending on fuel source. It's a window to a previous era of energy travails.
