Some forty years ago a couple of teenagers climbed over the fencing of the derelict Brooklands circuit to paint "Bring Back Brooklands" on the banking. Last weekend they came back once more - through the entrance this time - to celebrate the Brooklands Centennial. Michael Ware was present and sent some fresh slices of old British racing atmosphere.
"Nearly 500 cars were due to attend, many of them ones that had competed at Brooklands, the rest were pre-war vehicles. A circuit had been laid out on the Mercedes Benz World test track and cars were demonstrated throughout the day. Cars were despatched in batches to the far end of the Brooklands site to drive around the Byfleet Banking, and so experience part of the track. At intervals there were demonstrations on the famous Test Hill. On Sunday the 17th, the actual Centenary day, the organisers had re-created the opening cavalcade of 100 years ago. A lot of people had brought along Brooklands cars that are not often seen.
David Haywood brought along his partly completed 1920 Leyland 8.
The famous record car built by Parry Thomas 'Babs', owned by Owen Wynn Owen and driven by his son Geraint.
AX201, the first Silver Ghost Rolls-Royce, the marque celebrating 100 years this year stands alongside Michael Bristow’s 1930 Invicta S type."
