Holiday picture: International Citroen Car Rallye

Bart van de Loo sent us his holiday pictures. He was at the International Citroen Car Club Rallye (ICCCR), which recently landed in The Netherlands at Kasteel Middachten.

Once every 4 years this happening is organized by another European country. For any  Citroen afficionado the ICCCR is a must hundreds of  double chevron cars from 1911 onwards to admire (Dutch citroënists are a bit chauvinistic about the fact that the father of Andre Citroën - Levi Citroën - was a Dutch merchant from Amsterdam).

Bart's special interest was drawn by this type B14 with halftrack (Chenille). It was used during the "croisiere jaune" endurance expedition from Peking to Paris as a publicity stunt by the Citroën Works.

In 1934 there was the Bedaux Sub Arctic Expedition through north west Canada which used Citroen half tacks. It crossed some very rugged and beautiful terrain such as the Rocky Mountains. The BC Archives has a photo collection of this and if you go to their web site put Bedaux in the search box. I don't think this ended well for the so called expedition.

To be exact it's a P17E of 1934, the basis is a C4G with lot of mechanical improvment, in fact there are very few parts in common between a C4 and a P17.

Since a halftrack is showing, and since the rain caused lots of mud, perhaps a proven fix will bring future smiles.
A number of years back at a similar event in the States it rained for days(not Hershey). A 3-ton mason's dump was used(with partially opened tailgate) to gradually deposit ITEM 4(clay with crushed stone) along all dirt roadways in the fields. Lots was used continually, saving 2 days to party with some sun.

Dear Sirs, this is a Citroen Kegresse P17 from december 1933 or start of 1934. It is part of a series built for the french army and it did not attend crosiere jaune. It later went into civil service in a french commune.
The "car" has compleeted restoration with untouched patina. New belts was made to origial specification.

Similar army surplus Citroën-Kégresse trucks were used here in Finland atleast in the archipelago of Turku to deliver post and goods to islands from mainlands during harder winters during the thirties and until late 1940's, if busses couldn't get through exceptionaly heavy snow in the coastal iceroads. After the war, Finnish Army rebuilt a series of White M3 Half Tracks as heavy trucks, often with cabling equipment for rebuilding electric network. Some of these and later on many plywood-covered Bombardiers were also used as post trucks aswell.

I read in "The Black Journey" (Across Central Africa with the Citroen Expedition) G-M Haadt and L Audouin-Dubreuil that Citroen produced a film of the Citroen-Kégress exploits in the Sahara and the Peking trip. Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy for club purposes? Fingers crossed!

I was there too with my DS20 Pallas. Always a great 4 day Citroen gathering. I did not appreciate the parking arrangements in muddy fields, after rain on the 1st day, open to all types and makes of cars. For the ICCCR it’s nice to see long lines of pre and post war Citroens parked according to model http://www.lesds.it/immagini_sito/foto_raduni/ICCCR_ROMA_2008/DSCN6296_LesDS.htm . In this way cars can be moved from the camp sites, inaccessible to non campers, for show purposes.

As far as I know Citroen started car production in 1919 so I wonder how there could have been models from 1911 on on the meeting...And I'm rather sure that the Citroen-Kégress pictured is
a C4 and not a B14 model...
