Until 1924 the majority of cars fitted beaded edge tyres. Later they developed other technologies such as straight-sided and well-based tyres, due to the ability to bond a wire hoop into the inner circumference or bead of the tyre, to stop the tyre falling off the rim. Because the beaded edge tyres were an inferior technology, they soon became obsolete. The result is that removing and fitting a beaded edge tyre started to become a forgotten skill. In the video, our friend Dougal shows us how to remove the beaded edge (clincher) tyres.
"The term clincher tire is the American term for beaded edge tyres. There is no difference between beaded edge tyres and clincher tires. Beaded edge tyres need a minimum tyre pressure of 60psi (4 bar) to push the beads into the clincher of the rim and keep the clincher tire in place. The most common cause of a beaded edge vintage tyre failure is lack of pressure allowing the tyre to detach itself. Beaded edge tyres (clincher tyres) can only be used with a beaded edge or (clincher) wheel rim, " as described by Dougal Cawley.
Longstone Tyres provides a free vintage tyre-fitting service in their Yorkshire warehouse, and extraordinarily, they also provide a travelling tyre-fitting service of which advantage can be taken during the majority of the VSCC race meetings.
As with so many forgotten skills, it is best to go to the experts to do it for you. So all things considered, the best way to get your beaded edge tyres fitted is to go to a VSCC meeting. That way you don’t have to get dirty, you can watch the process in the flesh and you can spend the day surrounded by the best pre-war motorsport in the world.
Not sure what others do but I put both beads on at once so the tube doesn't nip between the beads. Tried one bead at a time and nipped the tube. Tyre demon 1 me 0 that time.
