”I am new in the old car world, any help would be much appreciated”

Robert Bodin, from Stuart, Florida send us a message. He is new in the “old car world” as he told us and recently became in the possession of a 1937 AC Aceca 16/80 Competition Roadster. A two-seater with a “sloping tail”, chassis number L645.

Information from the factory: 1938 2 seater competition sports. Black throughout with black hood. Engine no UBS7/599. Registered as GPH 423. Delivered on the 27th of April 1938 to first owner W. G. Hill 24 Belsize Park Hampstead.

"The car is discussed in the AC book by R. Mills and confirmed some of the information I have. But I am looking for more information on the previous owners etc on this car. I have contacted the AC club, joined, but to no avail as far as this car is concerned. Also contacted Brooklands, as there is a plate that states that the car was sold thru Brooklands Motors", Robert told us.

Details that we have regarding L645:

2016 R. Bodin, this is where it is now in my collection Minnesota, Florida
2008 - 2016 A. Voorthuis Washington DC
2008 - 1977 P. Schafer Wasgington DC
  W. J. Connolly Fairfax, Virgina
1973 J. Bond
1973 "another trader"
1958 - 1972 A. Crowter
1938 - 1958

Is there anybody who is able to fill in the gaps or can tell us more about L645? Please comment below. Any help would be much appreciated!

This is a photo of Dr. Paul Scheffer with L643 AKA "Clare" taken 6/19/1979 at Clare's birthday party in Washington DC. We flew in from Dallas to attend.

There is a photograph of this car taken in the 1960`s at a what looks like a typical London Mews dealers, listed on ebay

Link is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1938-A-C-2-litre-car-1960s-Dealer-Stock-Photo-Polaroid-4-x-3-inches/232843878568?hash=item363693a0a8:g:B5UAAOSwsZJbRTjr

Would be a nice addition to your history file.

J Bond is probably Jack Bond a dealer in London operating in the 1970`s

Brooklands Motors operated Pre war from 103 New Bond Street, Mayfair, London and were probably the supplying agent as they handled high end new cars.

GPH is a Surrey registration (a county in England), and luckily the registration records up to 1944/5 survive with the Kithead trust . Contact details are on their website www.kitheadtrust.org

They are very helpful. As long as the car was taxed, they should have a copy of the record card showing names of owners, etc.

The best advice I can give is to be liberal with the grease/oil gun on all moving parts plus the others where no grease nipple is fitted (eg dynamo, accelerator linkage, clutch mechanism, distributor, etc.. The lubrication interval on my pre-war car (M.G. VA Tourer) is 500 miles and provided this is done and the ignition parts and petrol pump are attended to, the car will be very reliable. Ignore these and you will be recovering the car with a tow-truck! Best wishes.

Nice car! Shame it is now "in my collection". Far too many cars are ending up "in collections".
