Identify a mystery engine and radiator

Letter to the editor

I am trying to identify a mystery engine and radiator. Whilst they came from the same location I do not believe that they are from the same vehicle.

The engine is definitely of British manufacture with Lucas starter motor and dynamo. I would date it as being from the mid 20's period and originally it featured magneto ignition. At some point what I think is a distributor from a flat head Ford V8 has been crudely fitted at the front. I would guess that the capacity is around 1500cc with a three bearing crank and the bottom end appears to be fully pressurised. The most unusual feature of this engine is the fully enclosed clutch in a bell housing with an approximately 1" aperture for the drive to a separate gearbox.

Who can help me further?

Many thanks, John Kent

It has some similarities to the Alvis 12/50 engine but it is not, although it has the 'architecture' of Coventry about it; Marseal perhaps?

The only image I could find of a Marseal car shows an exposed flywheel whereas this one is fully enclosed.

The starter motor is a Lucas M45.

Are there any numbers on the starter/dynamo?

Nice engine! The fact there is no gearbox may point to it being a slow revving marine unit. There may be a reduction gear in the thick bellhousing (star/planet gears?). No idea on the engine make however.

The bell housing contains a typical vintage single plate type clutch.

Could it be early Armstrong Siddeley 4/14 hp ?

The chap I obtained the engine from says that he is familiar with an Armstrong Siddley unit and that this engine is different.
