If dreams come true…

If dreams come true
I'll be with you
I love that smile in your eyes
You see a dream in the skies
In your caress there is happiness
And love in view
If dreams come true...

Can you remember the melody and the wonderful trumpet music? It is a jazz song by Teddy Wilson and Billie Holiday.

For many prewar car enthusiasts, an Alfa Romeo 6C or 8C is a car they can only dream of. But! For some people, the dream comes true. This dream became reality for the lady and gentlemen in the photograph. They are the lucky ones, to own such an amazing car! We received these two photographs with the caption; "this Alfa Romeo was owned by the family in the 1930`s." With the question; "if anyone has any information about whereabouts the car is."

If anyone can tell us more about this specific Alfa Romeo that would be very grateful!

As I owned this car for 25 years I know a bit about it. When I purchased this car, it had an odd Yimkin body (post war) which I had replaced by one made to original style, as raced, lightweight of course, following a lot of research. It is defiantly 1500 NOT 1750. Shame the body has been replaced and now looks nothing like he car which raced Brooklands, Irish GP, TT etc. etc. Full details of the history originally went with the car when sold by me. I see a few well remembered items include battery/tool box and the filler for the reserve oil tank which should have a tap inside for the mechanic to let down oil during a race, the oil tank sitting by the mechanic’s left leg. It did have this when it left me.
Must admit bit of a shock to see reg no. I remember so well whilst the rest of the car is obviously completely new and nothing like it was born and loved and driven several times from England to Italy.
Seems that the car’s history must now apply to the chassis, engine etc. and certainly not to the body. No way would you race with that surely.
I can still lay my hands on photo of Ramponi sitting in the car with Sammy Davis in close attention. I was honoured to “commission” SCHD for oil painting the of car racing through Comber village. And I still have the plaque for the radiator from the 1000 Miglia, not the present event but the first of the runs over the old course which was four-day Alfa publicity rally for the then new modern 1750. Seems there is a new wire grill for the rad, the previous one made by me when at sea in an aircraft carrier. The car, of course, had to stay at home for a while. As I said, I knew the car rather well.

Hi Mic,

Please could you let me know if there is any more information about the Yimkin body that came with your car?

I have a Yimkin chassis I'm and trying to trace the cars by process of elimination .... so any photos or information would be much appreciated.

They only made 6 or 7 of them.

Best wishes,

Alastair

The previous comments have covered the car well. I have taken a bit longer to investagate GU9699.
You can see the results here. ( with pictures) http://bit.ly/2K0nUYo
Including details of body and engine changes during its long ,active, much-travelled life.

Hi Rob,
Fantastic pictures! The only info I could find in my files was that this should be a 6C 1500 with chassis number 0312873. Unfortunately no further info about the coach builder - which must be English - or if the car still excists...
Regards, Jeroen

According to my personal files, "GU 9699" is a 1929 6C 1500 SS car, originally bodied by Zagato. It was first owned by Mrs Florence Stiles, clearly registered to her name by her Husband F W Stiles, noted Alfa Romeo dealer of the time. It was then owned by a certain Mr. Edgar Fronteras.
I wonder if it's Mrs Stiles sitting in the car in the pictures?

Chassis number is 0312873, engine number is 0312872

The engine has possibly been swapped with car 0312872, so that car now has engine nr. 0312873

It's clear that in the pictures the car was in a touring setup, and the windscreen seems like it's an addition from the era.

You'd be happy to know that the car still exists and currently resides in the Louwman Collection ad the Hague.

Likewise, if there is further history to the car than what I have managed to put together I'd be extremely happy to hear it!

I attach some a picture from my files.

Giulio Ramponi (8 January 1902 – December, 1986) was an Italian automobile technician and racing driver, he owned this car
1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport Works Carlton 0312873
Produktionsjahr: 1929
Chassis Nummer: 0312873
Design: Carlton Carriage Company

In April 1929, Mrs Florence Stiles [wife of F.W. Stiles] went to Milan to collect four 6c 1500 Super Sport Alfa Romeos. All four cars were registered in Milan in her name on 29 April 1929 and brought to England: they are shown in the upper photograph on p. 150 of Angela Cherrett’s above-mentioned book, our subject car being the one on the far right, shown with the legendary Giulio Ramponi at its wheel. One of these four cars [chassis no. 0312873] was acquired by Edgar Fronteras and campaigned by him during 1929 as a „privateer“, with support from Alfa Romeo [British Sales] Ltd.

En could be in the Louwman museum
