Information sought about the Tangier Hill-Climb

Letter to the editor

As a native of Tangier and motorsport enthusiast, I've always been fascinated and intrigued by the hill-climb race that was run in my city for several glorious decades. In this race, Edouard Meyer had his last victory driving his Bugatti Type 35C in 1929—the same car which, the year before, set a 91 m.p.h. world speed record between Casablanca and Marrakesh. I was able to find out little about this race and even less in the way of pictures until the Tangier American Institute for Moroccan Studies published an exceptional collection of period images, among which I found these 18 photographs. They show the preparations and development of the race during the 1930s. Some Fords, a Wolseley, a Renault, a Citroën and two Adler Trumpf Junior Sports have caught my attention. I would like to know more details about this race and see some more pictures of it.

I have no information about the race, or rather the races, as the pictures are from different events. Two cars with the starting number "4" and two with "9".

It is possible that these pictures are from the firstRallye du Maroc of 1934, won by Fred Bravard in an Essex, and the second Rallye du Maroc of 1935, won by Jean Trévoux and co-driver Marcel Lesurque in a three-litre Bugatti. Since quite a lot of cars were launched in 1935, we could even see the third Rallye du Maroc of 1937, won again by Jean Trévoux and co-driver Marcel Lesurque, this time in a Hotchkiss.

Of course, the photos could have been taken at a completely different event.

Here is a list of my identifications:

1 — "?" Adler Trumpf Junior Sport, 1935-37
2 — "12" Ford Model B Fordor sedan, 1932
3 — "8" Ford V8 Model 48 Tudor sedan, 1935
4 — "15" Ford V8 Model 48 De Luxe five-window coupé, 1935
5 — "9" possibly a Graham-Paige, c.1929
6 — racing car, obscured by PreWarCar.com logo
7 — "3" Morris 10/4 Series II, 1935-37, or Morris 12/4 Series II, 1935-37
8 — possibly a Ford Model B, obscured by PreWarCar.com logo
9 — "4" Chevrolet Master Eagle Series CA coupé, 1933
10 — identical to third image
11 — "9" Renault Vivasport Type ACM1‎, 1935
12 — "1" Ford V8 Model 48 roadster, 1935
13 — identical to first image
14 — "4" Adler Trumpf Junior Sport, 1935-37
15 — unidentified
16 — [T 1200] Fiat 520 berlina, 1926-30
17 — same car as in 16th image
18 — "6" Citroën Rosalie 8CV, 10CV or 15CV, 1932–1938

Thank you Mr. Stolpmann for your comments. Indeed, the pictures are from different years. The first "Rallye International du Maroc" was in 1929, when Edouard Meyer won with his Bugatti Type 35. The second was in 1934, when Fred Bravard won with his Essex Terraplane.

I don't think that Tangier's race was part of the Rallye du Maroc as all the editions were held in Casablanca, within the French Protectorate area, and Tangier was an international city zone. In some pictures you can see the inscription "Rallye Tanger" on the side of the cars and I have no doubt that all the photographs were taken in Tangier.

Thank you very much for your list of identifications. I was hoping to see some Bugattis, maybe the ones in image 15, but the Adlers are also very special cars. The white one was registered in the province of Hesse-Nassau and the other in the province of Rhenish Hesse.
