Last Sunday seventeen racing cars lined up on the grid at Donington Park for the pre-1961 race during the VSCC’s SeeRed Vintage and Historic Racing Festival. Just as the race was about to start the heavens opened. Duncan Ricketts settled into the lead with his stunning 1938 ERA E Type, leaving Tom Dark to battle with Mark Gillies in the ERA R3A for second and third place. Tom was racing his rare 1947 Bugatti Type 73C which never raced in period as it was a mothballed Molsheim project. Dark passed Gillies and was then able to challenge Ricketts for the lead, but conditions were worsening and areas of the track were beginning to flood. As Gillies grappled with the streaming rivers of water, he went off at the Old Hairpin giving photographer Mick Walker the opportunity for an excellent photograph. Ricketts crossed the finish line twenty seconds ahead of Tom Dark and was particularly jubilant as it was the first race that the ERA had finished this year.
