It is only original once: 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C1750GT Berlinetta Aerodinamico Mille Miglia by Touring (Brevette Weymann)
"I bought my first serious Alfa Romeo many years ago. I think it must have been around 1980. A 1929, 6C 1750 Super Sport. One of my oldest car professors (Bart Loyens) taught me; that in case I would ever wanted to buy a Alfa Romeo, it would need to be a Super Sport and not a Grand Sport. The SS Series were the first to win the Mille Miglia. He was right. The first Series of any car was always the purest. Still, even an open 6C, (Super or Grand Sport) is one of several. Fabulous cars but produced in relatively large numbers and most of them bodied by Zagato.
One of three built for the Mille Miglia
The 6C 1750 that I purchased recently is of a totally different category. After many years I managed to lay my hands on the only surviving of three build special coupes made to be entered for the original Mille Miglia road race.
Just the full name of chassis number 10914569 is impressive by itself! The 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C1750GT Berlinetta Aerodinamico Mille Miglia by Touring (Brevette Weymann).
The latter is not without importance. Carrozzeria Touring was already known for their lightweight (later with the Superleggera technique) bodies and the Weymann system added further saving in weight. Instead of a full aluminium or steel body, the fabric was stretched over a wooden frame. The plexiglass windows, to safe even more weight, do not open like on usual cars, with a winder, but slide down and can be fixed at any height.
On top of all the “lighter means faster” features, the car has state of the art minimalistic bucket seats to further emphasise the race pedigree. This particular car was entered for the 1933 edition of the Mille Miglia and finished 1st in class and 17th overall. Driven by Bruno Donnini and Angelo Sperti under race number 74.
It is like a new car
We are lucky enough it was never totally restored or taken apart and shows only 24000 original km's. In fact, it is like a new car. A full list of owners since the factory is known, most even including the selling prices found in old Italian documents complete up until the original tax book.
A truly fabulous automobile that was on my wishlist for the last 35 years. Mostly due to the originality. A car like this is a completely different experience compared to the usual (over)restored cars. It drives, brakes, smells, shifts gears, it FEELS in a different manner than restored examples. It is like the human body. In these modern times, we are fortunate that the medical world is capable of giving us a new knee or hip. But the first one, given to us by mother nature, cannot be improved. As the saying goes, it’s only original once!"
This Alfa Romeo will be presented by Fine Automobiles during Salon Retromobile 2019 at the stand of Fine automobiles. Stand No. 1 M 051.
