Years before Route 66.

Before US Highways were numbered they had a name. America's first (1913) rock paved transcontinental highway was the Lincoln Highway, winding from New York to San Francisco. Just like Route 66 the Lincoln Highway has its dedicated followers, preserving as much of the original highway as possible. Just recently the Lincoln Highway Association have published, making use of using Google Maps, of the whole coast-to-coast route, which makes it possible to see and drive every original mile of the historic Lincoln Highway, preferably in your antique motorcar of course. Along the route are several markers, like the one in Ashton, Illinois (pictured above), that recalls the town's 1921 Pavement Jubilee, a two-day celebration honoring the newly paved section of the Lincoln Highway and the town's new electric streetlights. But there's lots more to see along the route, go check for yourself !

(see LVA for 31-05-12 for example) Publicity for this in your columns would always be welcome.
