Dancing downhill in a 1930 Alvis is the team Paul Carter / James Ewing. A last year's photo. As today, Sunday the 4-th Winter Trial organised by rally-veteran Bart Rietbergen will start from Valkenburg in the South of Holland and find its way in four days through the higher parts of Europe and particularly the French Alps to Monte Carlo. Among some 100 classic rally machines no less than 17 pre-wars will compete. It is noteworthy that rally organisers measure the succes of their event from the percentage of prewar cars that compete. When you have done a rally like the Wintertrial you understand. Yes of course the Volvo Amazones and Porsches 356 are way much faster (I used to drive a Mercedes 300 SE, like Bohringer did). No offense, but US machinery is pretty useless in these winter mountains. But then you should see an full size Lagonda coming down the hairpins with snowchains, wow! Or worse, without snowchains...! The only non-British made car is a 1939 Lancia Aprilia. Oldest is a 1924 Bentley 3 /4,25 .If you ever have the chance... Oh boy, that's motoring!
