Do we have to introduce you to the exceptional mascots of René Lalique? Probably not, but just in case, René Lalique was a master glass-maker who in the late 1920's, early 1930s created a number of unique glass radiator mascots, each symbolizing speed and motion. Some of these mascots are well-known, others quite rare. This fox, 'Le Renard', is one of only seven known to exist. Today each of Lalique's glass mascots are highly prized collector's items and when one comes on the market it always creates a stir. Now imagine what will happen if a whole set of Lalique mascots reaches the auction block... like the one of Miss Ele Chesney, a well-known woman collector of antique automobiles. Her complete set of thirty mascots will be one of the star-attractions at RM's Amelia Island auction, March 10. Be sure to bring a hefty wallet, as the estimated result of the fox alone is between 800,000 and 1,200,000 US dollars. *)
*) Update by editor: this estimate is for the whole collection, not just the fox!
*) Update II by editor: at auction the collecction sold for $805.000!
The estimate mentioned in the catalogue, between 800.000 and 1.200.000, is for the complete collection of 30 pieces. Not just for the fox.
Kind regards,
Maurice
