Little boy, big car mystery (update: Darmont 'Etoile de France')

The junior pilot and his race car that made a stop at the sidecurb for a closer inspection are both postwar of course. We may be wrong, but the big car seems a lot older. Andrea Iannaccone recently found the picture. On his quest for more information about the marque of the car that is the one on the right - he roamed our website for several hours but got lost in the many pictures and stories. We willingly share his friendly request.

So, what do we know about this image? Well, it’s been made in Paris (1956) by the famous photographer Robert Doisneau and that’s it. As additional information Andrea wrote, “The hood ornament looks like a plane but its different because wings are flat on the front and curved on the back, differently from all other ornaments.”. Upon closer inspection of the radiator grill there appears to be no core and it is as if we see a V2 shimmering in there. Also the car appears a three-wheeler. All that should help a lot. Over to you...

Update: just this weekend an expositon about Robert Doisneau was openened in Rotterdam, NL.

A young gendarme in the back streets of post war Paris, pauses to reflect on a suspicious car. Obviously illegally parked in a careless manner. Best to report it. Whatever make it is.

Before WW2, Morgan 3-wheelers were made under license in France as Darmonts. The Darmont website claims the car in the Doisneau photo as a rebodied Darmont 'Etoile de France' model. The car would have been built in the 1930s and subsequently rebodied.

Hello, this well known picture shows a Darmont Threewheeler that had a "body upgrade" at some time during it's hard life. After the victory of McMinnies in a Morgan Runabout at the first Cyclecar Grand Prix at Amiens in 1913, Morgan Three-Wheelers became quite popular in France. The cars were imported by the Darmont brothers Roger and André.Darmont made an agreement with the Morgan Motor Company for a French produced Morgan, which was called the "Darmont-Morgan".Over the years Darmont did his own body-styling, built his own engines and introduced all new models like the Darmont Spécial and the Étoile de France. Production of the three-wheelers ended in 1936, but in April 1935 Darmont had introduced the V-Junior, a four wheeled car with three forward speeds and reverse.
