On the occasion of the 31st “Rencontre Amilcar-Salmson” - May 2006 - the Dutch artist Ben Cox made this bust of racing driver André Morel. The name Morel will be forever linked with Amilcar, but he started his career at car manufacturer Le Zèbre (gazoline.net) where he became the commercial agent for southern France. There he met Moyet, Akar and Lamy, founders of the new car make Amilcar. This proved to be a turning point in Morel's life: at the age of 36 he officially became an Amilcar works driver and attracted attention through his clever driving ability. For instance, in 1928 he was the first to break the magical 200 km barrier in an 1100cc Amilcar. He managed to combine his work for Amilcar with racing for other large car manufacturers, such as Voisin and Delage. At Delage he formed a team with Robert Benoit, his biggest rival in Salmson racing cars in the cycle-car class. In 1929, when Amilcar was forced to close its "service de course" for financial reasons, André Morel became the distributor for Hudson and Essex, but he continued his racing car passion into old age.
